The lighting is what breathes soul into marquee letters. The contrast between warm incandescent filament warmth and faceted carnival cabochon reflections can turn a simple wooden box into an enchanting spectacle. But how do you select and wire the right lights safely?
Cabochon turbo bulbs vs exposed Edison bulbs
There are two primary aesthetic styles in modern marquee construction:
1. Carnival Cabochon / Turbo Bulbs
These consist of a threaded two-piece acrylic faceted cover with a central LED module inside. When lit, the starburst facets refract light in dazzling radial patterns. They are practically indestructible, waterproof, and run cool to the touch — making them the number one choice for rental companies.
2. Exposed Warm LED Filament Bulbs (G40 / S14 / E12)
Popular for rustic weddings, boho receptions, and industrial warehouse venues. They resemble vintage incandescent Edison globes while consuming only 0.6W to 1W per bulb.
Choosing socket sizes: E12 vs E14 vs E27
- E12 (Candelabra, US Standard): Compact base, perfect for 3ft and 4ft letters where you want subtle, densely spaced illumination.
- E14 (SES, European Standard): The European counterpart to E12. Ideal for international builds.
- E27 / E26 (Standard Household): Larger diameter, commanding presence. Great for 5ft letters and massive stage sets.
⚡ Voltage Safety Note
For rental environments with guests and children around, low-voltage 24V or 12V LED cabochon systems powered by a sealed internal transformer offer ultimate safety against accidental shock.
Wiring in parallel vs series
Never wire marquee bulbs in series. In a parallel harness, both the positive (live) and neutral conductors run continuously past every socket. If one bulb unscrews or fails, every other letter bulb remains brightly lit.
Dimmer controls: Why they are indispensable
Photographers will thank you for this! During daylight outdoor events, you need maximum 100% brightness. But during evening first dances or cake cutting, un-dimmed bulbs can overexpose camera sensors. Always install a quality inline trailing-edge dimmer so you can dial in the perfect soft warm glow.
